Our newest grip technology, Nordic Traction, takes our winter grip to the next level—something recently confirmed in independent testing by the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE).

The Highest Score Ever Recorded

Nordic Traction is our latest grip technology designed for winter shoes without studs. In the standardized SIS Ice Grip Test (SS 657177), conducted by RISE (Research Institute of Sweden), Nordic Traction achieved an Ice Grip Index of 7.4—the highest score ever recorded in the test.

To put that into perspective, a sole must reach an index of at least 3.0 to be considered “grip-friendly,” the average score among the 30 soles tested is 4.2. Nordic Traction performed 7.4 times better than the reference sole.

How does the test work?

The test simulates challenging winter conditions to ensure reliable results. Ice-covered asphalt, cooled to -10°C, is used to replicate real-world slippery surfaces.

A tribometer—a specialized testing device—is employed to apply a weight equivalent to human body weight to the sole being tested. The tribometer then measures the point at which the sole begins to slip under the load.

To ensure accuracy, the test is conducted multiple times: first with a reference sole made of standard rubber, then with the Nordic Traction sole, and finally with the reference sole again to verify consistency. The result is an Ice Grip Index, which compares the performance of the tested sole to the reference.
