Since 2001, Icebug has been developing running shoes specifically for winter conditions. That journey has given us a unique understanding of what a great winter running shoe needs to deliver — safety, enjoyment, and efficiency when temperatures drop and surfaces get slippery.
In this guide, we take a closer look at our winter running shoes and the construction behind them. Whether you run in urban environments, on winter roads, or on technical snowy trails, we hope this guide helps you keep running all year round.
Everyone has a unique running style, and there is no universal truth about how you should run. Recommendations vary depending on who you ask. Choosing shoes based on your natural gait can help reduce injury risks and unnecessary strain.
If you land on your heel, choose shoes with more cushioning and a higher drop to support a smooth roll. If you land on your midfoot or forefoot, a lower drop may feel more natural, and you can select the cushioning level based on personal preference.
Low-drop shoes require a forward-driven technique with mid/forefoot landing. This loads calves and Achilles more. Experienced runners seeking higher pace may prefer lower drop. Beginners and recreational runners generally benefit from a mid-drop (4–10 mm), which provides a smoother roll and puts less strain on the body.
Low drop: 0–4 mm
Mid drop: 4–10 mm
High drop: 10+ mm
Cushioning – Long distances: choose higher cushioning (Järv, Myr, Arcus) – Technical terrain: choose medium cushioning (Pytho6)
Toe box – A roomy toe box keeps toes warmer and improves comfort on longer runs.
